About the Department

School of Studies in Statistics was established in 1977 with major emphasis on industrial Statistics and Operations Research. At research level, guidance is available in Sampling Theory, Quality Control, and Operations Research. The department is under obligation to feed train manpower required in various disciplines and industrial sectors of the state. The dedicated faculty actively working in applied field of Statistics have completed 10 research projects and more than 250 research papers in reputed journals. They have produced 34 of Ph. D.’s under their supervision. Many National level Seminar/ Conferences, Workshops and Outreach Programs have been organized to the credit of the Department. A large number of senior statisticians have visited the Department.

Presently, the Department offers M. A. / M. Sc. (Statistics) with CBCS (Choice Based Credit System) and Ph. D. (Statistics) courses.  The M.A. / M. Sc. Course are divided into four Semesters with intake of 20 students. The teachers-students ratio is about 1:4 and passing rate is 100%. Computer oriented courses SPSS, MS-EXCEL and R are included in the curriculum to enhance their capacity for Data Analysis. The students are required to participate in Departmental seminar to enrich their knowledge. A regular mentoring of students is done for their personality development and job point of view. Special lectures are also arranged from time to time under Public Outreach Program of the University. An interdisciplinary teaching of Statistics is also done under CBCS–a Flagship Program of the University.

Ph.D. students are required to complete a Course Work of one year duration and they have to get published at least two research papers in U.G.C. listed Journals for the award of the degree followed by regular attendance of 300 days.

Entry among these courses is through entrance examination. Students of the Department have credit to qualify Indian Statistical Service Examination, UGC NET, CGPSC, CGVYAPAM and other competitive examinations. Some of the Ph.D. students have received Young Scientists Award by Chhattisgarh Council of Science and Technology. Our Alumni are working at many reputed Govt. and Private Organizations.
